Some form of squat rack is typically the centrepiece of a strength training-focused home gym and squat racks usually take up the most floor space in a home gym. Many of us would love to have the biggest, beefiest power rack, but we are constrained by the space available to us. This was certainly the case for us as we planned our garage gym. We knew we wanted two places to squat because my partner and I always train together, which meant we needed to be smart in our choice. However, we couldn’t find a definitive resource on squat rack sizes, so we made the best squat rack dimension resource possible.
We scoured every major retailer’s website to determine the dimensions of their squat racks. Then we calculated the floor space (square footage) that each squat rack needs, and put their measurements in neat tables so you have a one-stop shop to see which squat racks will fit in your home gym. We hope that the tables below can be the ultimate resource for you as you search for the perfect squat rack for your home gym.
Squat Rack Size Guide
Rack Types (Briefly) Explained
1. Power Racks:
A power rack (or squat cage) consists of 4-vertical uprights connected by a series of crossbeams and (typically) a pull up bar. The vertical and horizontal posts and beams create a cage in which people can lift weights – notably to perform barbell squats. Power racks also have safety pins to catch dropped barbells in failed lifts. Some power racks have additional posts beyond the cage (6 total vertical posts) to allow for weight plate storage.
2. Squat Rack and Half Racks:
Squat racks and half racks have two vertical uprights that are connected to a metal base. The metal base has one cross member to provide stability, and there may be a horizontal beam or pull up bar connecting the two vertical posts for added stability and functionality. Squat racks or half racks may also come with safety arms that project off the uprights, though this is less common than in power racks. People perform exercises between the base, or can walk a barbell further from the rack to take advantage of more open space.
3. Wall Mounted and Fold Away Racks:
Wall-mounted racks have short horizontal beams that connect the rack to a “stringer”, which allows the wall to provide extra stability for the rack. Wall mounted squat racks do not require a base, and therefore take up less floor space than their non-wall-mounted versions. Fold-away racks have the same wall-mount set up, however, their horizontal beams are hinged and allow for the rack to be folded against a wall for storage when not in use. Fold-away racks utilize detent pins to lock into the “in-use” and “stored” positions.

Squat racks, power racks and wall-mounted racks come in different depths, widths, and heights depending on retailer, attachment options and stability.
The median power rack size, based on 69 analyzed racks, is 18.67 sq.ft. Power racks range in their footprint from 5.64 sq. ft. to 46.88 sq. ft. and range from 71″ to 101.62″ in height, with most around 90″ tall.
The median squat rack or half rack dimension, based on 38 analyzed racks, takes up 17.55 sq. ft. of floor space (range: 4.28 – 41.25 sq. ft.). Half rack and squat rack heights are much more variable than power racks, with a range between 47″ (squat stands) and over 110″ in height.
Wall-mounted and fold-away racks vary in their dimensions because some function as mounted half racks, while some are fold-away power racks. Therefore, their depth off of the wall ranges from 12″ to 65″ when functional. Most wall mounted racks fold away to less than 10″ from the wall when stored.
Power racks, on average, take up about 1 sq. ft. more floor space than a squat rack or half rack. However, the space required for a number of power racks is very comparable to, or less than, a lot of half racks. There is no rule of thumb that power racks always take up more space than half racks.
Choosing a Squat Rack That Fits Your Home Gym
As we’ve already discussed, racks come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes. It can be a bit overwhelming to try to pick the right one for your space. There are a few steps that you should take before you start trying to choose your squat rack.
We suggest measuring out your gym space (even a rough estimate is great) then determine how much floor space you want to devote to your squat rack or power rack. Determining this from the outset will help you whittle down the choices available to you.
Then you will want to identify the minimum weight capacity for your rack. For the most part, commercially-available racks will be able to handle however much you can squat (unless you happen to be a world-class powerlifter). However, you want your squat rack’s maximum weight capacity to be at least 150% of your squat 1RM at the bare minimum. If you can squat 200 kg (440 lbs), then the rack’s minimum weight capacity should be 300 kg (660 lbs). Weight capacity is closely related to the gauge of steel used in the rack’s manufacturing. Next, you’ll want to decide if you want a power rack, a squat rack of a wall-mounted rack for the given space dimensions you determined earlier. Remember that the choice of rack will also impact the amount of space you have available to perform your exercises. Availability of safety pins/spotter arms, pull up bars, on-rack plate storage and other rack accessories will be dependent on the type of rack you choose – particularly the upright size and hole spacing.
Finally, you should consider if you will be anchoring your squat rack to your floor with concrete screws, or if it will just be sitting on your gym floor. Anchored racks may have smaller feet on their uprights, and may have
Once these have been decided, then you can start to utilize the tables below to find racks that fit your needs.
Extra Considerations Beyond Squat Rack Square Footage
The footprint of your squat rack is just one component to consider when determining what rack is suitable for your training space. You also have to think about the room you need in and around your rack to perform the training that you want to do.
Extra Width Beyond Your Rack
Barbells are 84” (7 feet) from end to end, so you need to add about 35” to the width of most squat racks to account for the length of the bar. Nearly all squat racks are 49-51″ wide, as you can see in the tables below. . In addition, you’ll need room to move around the bar ends and room to load your bar.
The National Strength and Conditioning Association suggests 3 feet of space beyond each barbell end. If you follow this guide then you’ll need about 13 feet of width for you squat rack and barbell, or about 53.5” of space on each side of your uprights. I, personally, don’t feel like you need a full 3 feet beyond the end of your barbells, but you’ll need 1.5 feet or so to load your bar without stressing your back.
Having space beyond your bar ends will also give you wiggle room if you sway during your walk out while setting up to squat. Feeling claustrophobic when prepping to lift is the worst.
Room Within Your Rack
I think people can sometimes become enamoured with having a 4- or 6-post power rack without considering how they will be using it. I find doing exercises like lunges or split squats very difficult within the “lifting area” of a power rack. I always feel like I’m limited and that I might hit an upright at any time. I feel similar doing overhead presses unless I’m in a very tall power rack.
You will want to consider how you feel moving around within the cage of a power rack, particularly if you do a lot of unilateral strength work. A half-rack, squat rack or squat stands could actually make more sense for you.
Excess Room Above Your Rack
A final consideration is if you need above your rack for things like pull ups and muscle ups. You will want about 2+ feet of space above your rack’s pull up bar if you will just be doing pull ups. A clearance of 3-4 feet or more will be required to do muscle ups.
No one wants to have to worry about smoking their forehead on their ceiling or a garage’s wood crossbeam while working out. The more clearance, the better.

Now that you’ve had a chance to figure out what type of rack you’d like, the approximate amount of floor space you’re willing to devote to your rack and some preferred accessories and attachments, it time for the fun part.
