Rogue Echo Bar (2.0) - The Ultimate Do-It-All Budget Bar

The Basics:

  • Price: $205 USD
  • Made in USA
  • Weight: 20kg (44lbs)
  • Tensile Strength: 190,000 PSI
  • Spin: Bushing
  • Warranty: 1-year

The Rogue Echo Bar is our #1 budget home gym barbell that can handle any type of training that you throw at it.

As we highlighted above, the Rogue Echo Bar has a perfect mix of grip without harshness on its knurling. This allows the bar to perform well in heavy deadlifts, Olympic lifts and barbell cycling. Further, the bushing sleeve have a fluid spin that will never hamper your lifts. The one knock on it is that there are only Olympic lifting knurling marks. Most budget, do-it-all barbells will also have powerlifting marks too. However, I don’t see this as a deal breaker for most people that train in a home gym.

Although the Echo bar has a zinc finish, it also has the “Rogue Work Hardening” finish too. Usually, zinc coated bars are pretty susceptible to wear and tear. But the RWH seal of approval apparently makes the bar more durable. The zinc coating also means that the bar is on the high side of resistance to oxidation and rust. This means the bar is pretty low maintenance.

The Echo Bar has solid whip to it to help with squatting out of a clean or jerking the bar overhead. The whip coupled with bushing sleeves means that it is more than capable for Olympic weightlifting workouts or CrossFit style barbell cycling workouts.

As a part of Rogue’s Echo line of products, the Echo Bar is a budget-conscious but high quality line of American made equipment that can easily be used to outfit a garage gym.

The only downside to this bar is it only having a 1-year warranty. However, it’s tensile strength and zinc coating mean that the Echo Bar should last forever.

Overall, the Echo bar is an unreal bar at a great price.

The Synergee Fitness Games Barbell - A Great Budget CrossFit Bar

The Basics:

  • Price: $229 USD
  • Made in USA
  • Weight: 20kg (44lbs)
  • Tensile Strength: 190,000 PSI
  • Spin: Bushing
  • Warranty: 1 year on manufacturer defects

I was able to snag the Synergee Fitness Games Barbell from Amazon (for just over $100 USD) during a huge sale in March of 2023. Synergee Fitness kept popping up in home gym Facebook groups (join my group here!) and on Instagram so I figured I needed to test them out.

The Synergee Fitness Games Bar has been a pleasant surprise. I believe that it is a legit contender with Rogue’s budget options as a solid investment for home gym owners.

First of all, the Games Bar looks so good. I have the red cerakote finish with black sleeves. It looks mint in our garage gym, as you can see in the picture above. The bar has a 190,000 PSI tensile strength and max load capacity of 1500 lbs, so it is as strong and capable as any bar on the market.

Five bearings are located in each sleeve. This gives the bar adequate spin for Olympic lifts, without being too spiny for deadlifts or bench press. As a result, the Synergee Games Bar functions well as a powerlifting or Olympic lifting (or CrossFit) barbell. It really can do everything.

The Amazon listing boasts about a 1.2 mm diamond knurling that is great for CrossFit style workouts. However, I think that the knurling is lacking some bite. The bar feel slippery when performing sets of snatches. This is one thing to keep in mind if you perform a lot of barbell cycling. You will need a lot of chalk and maybe lifting straps.

Overall, I’m very impressed with the Synergee Games Bar. The American-brand is designed for garage and home gyms, with a strong push towards family health and fitness. Synergee Fitness is a brand that I can get behind and I strongly recommend the Games Bar as a great do-it-all barbell for your home gym – without breaking your budget.

FringeSport Wonder Bar 2.0 - An Olympic Lifters (Budget) Dream

a Fringe Sport Wonder Bar is loaded with bumper plates while sitting on a weightlifting platform

The Basics:

  • Price: Check on Amazon
  • Made in China
  • Weight: 20kg (44lbs)
  • Tensile Strength: 205,000  PSI
  • Spin: Bushing or Bearing
  • Warranty: Lifetime + 30-day free returns

FringeSport, a company that radiates passion and enthusiasm, has quickly become one of my favourites. Their website and product descriptions exude a level of excitement that is hard to resist. Take, for instance, their description of the Wonder Bar:

“The Wonder Bar reigns as the nucleus of the barbell universe here at Fringe. We set out on a noble quest to design and build the best bar suited for commercial gyms, and make it available to you at a home gym price. We completed our hero’s journey and now offering our reward to you delights us.”

Their contagious enthusiasm is simply remarkable.

And it’s well justified. The FringeSport Wonder Bar is everything you could ask for in a home gym barbell. It epitomizes the classic do-it-all barbell, with a slight inclination towards Olympic lifting. As a result, the Wonder Bar shines as an excellent CrossFit-style barbell.

I recently got my hands on a FringeSport Wonder Bar for a snatch-focused workout. It was phenomenal to lift with. The knurling on it was the perfect amount of grip for both barbell cycling and heavy (for me) snatches. Yet, my hands didn’t feel beat up afterwards. It was the Goldilocks of bar knurling.

The Wonder Bar 2 had a solid spin (I used the bushing version but there’s a bearing version too). There were no performance issues with the bushings, even though it was clear that the gym I was at didn’t regularly take care of their bars.

With an impressive tensile strength of 205,000 PSI (the highest in its class), this barbell can handle the most demanding weights you can imagine. If you find yourself nearing the point of bending this bar, it’s probably time to consider investing in a barbell with a higher price tag.

Furthermore, the Wonder Bar features powerlifting and Olympic lifting knurl markers. However, it’s worth noting that it does not come with a center knurl.

Unlike many other bars in this price range, FringeSport offers an honest statement about the lack of whip in the Wonder Bar. While other manufacturers boast about their barbells’ whippiness, FringeSport acknowledges that the Wonder Bar is not designed with significant whip in mind. This refreshing transparency helps set realistic expectations for lifters.

The absence of significant whip may be a drawback for those focusing on heavy squats or Olympic lifts. However, for most training purposes, it is not a major concern.

Sporting a sleek all-black zinc finish, the Wonder Bar boasts a striking appearance. However, some users have reported minor aesthetic issues, particularly with the sleeves experiencing wear and tear from loading/unloading plates and dropping the bar with bumper plates. I definitely saw this when I used the Wonder Bar, and on the other 6 versions of the bar at the gym. Although this does not affect the bar’s performance, it’s worth noting.

All in all, the Wonder Bar presents a fantastic alternative to your typical Rogue barbells. Its incredible specifications, priced just over $200, make it an exceptional value. The Wonder Bar is capable of handling any weight you throw at it, features solid knurling, and comes with a lifetime warranty.

If you’re seeking a reliable and versatile do-it-all barbell that will continue to deliver outstanding performance for years to come, the Wonder Bar is an excellent choice.

XMark Lumberjack Bar - The Budget Starter Bar

The Basics:

  • Price: $184
  • Manufacturing location not listed (I’m assuming China)
  • Weight: 19.5kg (43lbs)
  • Tensile Strength: Not listed – but tested to 700lbs
  • Spin: Bushing
  • Warranty: Eligible for Return, Refund or Replacement within 30 days of receipt

I had to include this XMark Fitness Lumberjack Bar because it has been getting some solid reviews online. At less than $150, this bar is at a price point that suits pretty much everyone buying a first barbell for their home gym. To be completely honest, I’ve never used anything from XMark Fitness in my life. So this info is going to come from their website and other reviews I’ve seen.

The XMark Lumberjack Bar is a great  bar to test out if you are starting a home gym. This isn’t going to be the only barbell you ever buy, but it will be sufficient to determine if you want to expand on your home gym in the future. Online reviews and anecdotes suggest that The Lumberjack Bar holds up well, but I suspect that it won’t last as long as the other bars listed here. However, it’s hard to argue with the price point. You can check the current price here.

The company suggests that the Lumberjack Bar has been tested to a 700 lbs capacity. My suggestion is to never go above 66% of the listed max of a barbell – so you probably don’t want to go above 450 lbs on this bar. A 450 lbs safe limit will likely be enough for anyone buying a budget barbell, so you shouldn’t have any concerns about the barbell holding up during your lifts.

The Lumberjack Bar also has dual knurling marks, meaning it is built equally for Olympic lifting and powerlifting. The barbell shaft has a black manganese phosphate coating that looks very impressive when paired with the chrome sleeve. The shaft coating will help prevent rust development too. However, I have some concerns that the coating may wear out with re-racking of the bar on a squat rack. I haven’t seen any long-term reviews of the bar, but I’d be interested to see how this holds up.

The biggest downside to the XMark Lumberjack Barbell is its weight. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bar that weighs 19.5 kg or 43 lbs before. It is such an odd weight that makes zero sense. Obviously, you can just pretend the bar weighs 20 kg, but it still annoys me.

The XMark Fitness Lumberjack Bar seems like a great beginner bar for a home gym. It is relatively cheap, has a sufficient max load capacity, looks good and has great performance reviews.
